Politico isn't the first name that comes to mind when you think of state-backed media. You think of National Public Radio, or the Public Broadcasting System, but not an inside-the-Beltway founded in 2007, bought by a German media group in 2021, with publications spanning the US, UK, Canada and EU. But Politico has been funded by the US government through the purchase of subscriptions that were used across multiple agencies.
At the White House press briefing on Wednesday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the federal government would no longer be subsidizing these subscriptions for Politico.
