Most Americans believe that state governments should not be permitted to restrict what’s taught at public college and universities, according to a new study from the University of Chicago Forum for Free Inquiry and Expression and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
At the same time, most also believe professors should not be allowed to invite academic speakers to campus who’ve been accused of offensive speech in the past, nor should they be allowed to promote religious or political causes in their classrooms.
Those are some of the findings from a new survey that shows that Americans tend to balance their views about issues involving campus free speech - with majorities favoring colleges being able to place limits on offensive speech while also saying institutions should uphold principles of free speech on their campuses.
