Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski has joined fellow GOP Sen. Mitt Romney to support to creation of an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol breach.
"I’m going to support it," Murkowski said of the bill Tuesday, which passed the Democrat-controlled House with the support of 35 Republicans, according to The Hill.
The Senate is split 50-50 among Democrats and Republicans, which means Democrats will need support from eight more Republicans to pass the measure. Or they could attempt a legislative tactic to pass the measure with a simple majority, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the deciding vote.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Tuesday senators "hope to vote this week," before leaving Washington for Memorial Day recess.
