Go Woke, Go Broke: How New Media Is Winning the Streaming Wars

The Golden Age of Streaming Is Over, and Hollywood Only Has Itself to Blame

It wasn’t long ago that streaming felt like the future. Companies like Netflix and Disney+ promised a golden age of entertainment, offering vast libraries of content at our fingertips. But for millions of Americans, that promise has soured. Plagued by endless price hikes, password-sharing crackdowns, and a flood of unwatchable content that prioritizes political messaging over storytelling, the streaming giants are facing a rebellion from the very customers they once captivated.

The numbers don’t lie. Disney has struggled with profitability in its streaming division, and consumers are increasingly reporting “subscription fatigue.” But this isn’t just a business problem; it’s a cultural one. Hollywood has become a factory for progressive activism, using its platforms to lecture families on gender ideology, critical race theory, and a host of other left-wing priorities. They fundamentally misunderstand their audience, and now, they’re paying the price.

President Donald Trump often spoke about the out-of-touch coastal elites, and nowhere is that disconnect more obvious than in modern entertainment. The average American family doesn’t want a sermon when they sit down to watch a movie; they want to be entertained. For years, there was no alternative. Today, thanks to American innovation and entrepreneurship, that is rapidly changing.

The Rise of a Parallel Media Economy

This is a classic free-market story. When a handful of legacy companies fail to serve their customers, innovators see an opportunity. A new generation of media and technology companies is rising to meet the massive demand for entertainment that reflects and respects traditional American values.

Look at the stunning success of Angel Studios’ film Sound of Freedom. While legacy media outlets largely ignored it, the movie became a box office phenomenon through word-of-mouth and a grassroots movement of people hungry for powerful, meaningful storytelling. It proved that content doesn’t need a Hollywood stamp of approval to succeed; it just needs an audience.

Similarly, The Daily Wire has evolved from a news outlet into a full-fledged entertainment company with its streaming service, DailyWire+. They are producing movies, documentaries, and original series that directly challenge the Hollywood monopoly. More recently, they launched Bentkey, a kids’ streaming service dedicated to creating wholesome, adventurous, and educational content without the woke agenda that has infected Disney’s programming. This isn’t a niche market; it’s a direct response to parents across the country who are tired of having to vet every cartoon for political indoctrination.

Technology as the Great Equalizer

None of this would be possible without the very technology that the streaming giants pioneered. The internet, cloud computing, and advanced video compression have democratized content distribution. The old gatekeepers—the studios, the networks, the executives—no longer hold all the power. Platforms like Rumble have emerged as free speech alternatives to YouTube, providing a space for creators who have been censored or demonetized by Big Tech for expressing mainstream conservative viewpoints.

This trend extends beyond film and television. The video game industry, now larger than the film and music industries combined, has become another front in the culture war. Major game studios are increasingly inserting political narratives into their products, alienating a massive player base that simply wants to enjoy immersive and challenging games. In response, independent developers are finding success by focusing on quality gameplay and ignoring the political noise.

A Return to Consumer Choice

What we are witnessing is not just the decline of a few companies but the fragmentation of a media monoculture. For decades, a small group of executives in Los Angeles and New York decided what the rest of the country would watch. That era is definitively over.

Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter and its transformation into X is part of this same movement. By committing to free speech, X has become an essential platform for open debate and a direct challenge to the curated, censored environments of other social media platforms. It demonstrates a powerful principle: when you empower individuals and creators, you unleash innovation and competition.

The lesson for legacy media is simple: stop insulting your audience. Stop prioritizing activism over art. If they refuse to listen, consumers will continue to vote with their wallets and their attention, taking their business to the platforms and creators who actually respect them. The future of entertainment won’t be dictated by a woke oligopoly; it will be shaped by the choices of free people in a free market. And that’s a win for everyone.
